Rotary isolator switch FAQs

What is a rotary isolator?

A rotary isolator switch is used to turn power on or off in commercial or industrial applications. This helps protect circuit hardware from short circuits and overcurrent, and keeps engineers and electricians safe during testing and maintenance. Rotary isolators can also be locked in the OFF position using a padlock as an additional safety precaution.

What amp rotary isolator do I need?

The rotary isolator you install needs to match or exceed the rating of your circuit. For example, if you have a 16 amp circuit, you can use a 16 amp, 20 amp or 32 amp rotary isolator.

How many poles does my rotary isolator need?

Rotary isolators typically range from 1-pole to 6-pole models. Each one has a slightly difference function and application:

  • 1 pole: Isolates the electrical supply of a single-phase system.
  • 2 pole: Isolates a single-phase system from both sides for added safety.
  • 3 pole: Isolates all three phases in a three-phase system.
  • 4 pole: The same as a 3-pole rotary isolator with the addition of a neutral pole. This ensures the neutral wire is completely disconnected when the switch is in the OFF position. 4-pole rotary isolators are commonly used in commercial or industrial applications with higher safety requirements.
  • 6 pole: Used for very high current applications in three-phase electrical systems. They’re similar to 2-, 3- and 4-pole rotary isolators, but at a higher rating.

Where can I find product specifications?

Click on a product, then click the Specifications tab on the product page. This will give you information such as operating voltage, rotary switch poles, dimensions and standards.
