Back box FAQs

What is a back box?

A back box – also called a flush box, knockout box, wall box or back plate – is a plastic or metal housing for the front plate of a socket or switch. They’re fitted into the wall to protect wiring connections and electrical components against accidental contact. This reduces the risk of fires and electrical shocks.

Back boxes also facilitate neat installations, concealing wires and providing a sturdy mounting surface.

What size back box do I need?

For standard fittings:

  • Switches: 16mm
  • Sockets and dimmers: 25mm
  • Shaver and cooker switches: 32mm
  • USB sockets: 35mm

For flat, screwless and slim fittings:

  • Switches: 25mm
  • Sockets and dimmers: 35mm
  • USB sockets, and shaver and cooker switches: 47mm

What’s the difference between a plastic back box and a metal back box?

Plastic back boxes are typically used in stud partition walls. A hole is cut into the plasterboard, and two lugs clasp the plasterboard tightly as the faceplate screws are tightened.

Metal back boxes are used in solid walls, such as those made of stone, brick or breeze blocks. The cut out is chiselled out of the wall material. As you tighten the faceplate screws, the back box adheres tightly to the wall.

What are surface-mounted back boxes?

Sometimes, installing a back box in the wall isn’t possible or preferable. In these cases, you can buy a surface-mounted back box, also known as a pattress box. Unlike standard back boxes, the cable entry point for a surface-mounted back box is on the back rather than the side.

Where can I find product specifications?
